Fulfilment of Scriptures

Matthew 26:55, 56 - In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. "But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.

In today's scripture we see that Jesus was greatly respected by the people and they use to daily sit and listen to His teachings at the temple. They use to follow Him even into the wilderness to get healed and to hear Him. But one fine day their hearts towards Him change and to treat Him like a dangerous criminal not only the soldiers come to arrest Him but along with the solders the people come with clubs or fat sticks to arrest Him.

There was no warrant against Him but it was on the instructions of the High Priest and the religious scribes that Jesus was arrested. And when He was arrested we read that all the disciples forsook Him and fled. The scripture does not say that they were just scared and ran away but it says 'they forsook Him'. That means even His closest disciples became part of the mob and surrendered Him unto the soldiers. This is said was done so as to fulfil scriptures as written in Zechariah 13:7. Not only the sheep disown the Shepherd and scatter but the later part of the scripture was also fulfilled in 70AD wherein Jerusalem was fully destroyed and every person in the city was utterly killed and hung from poles, so much so that they ran out of wood.

Now think if the disciples had not disowned Jesus and ran away or the High Priest and scribes had not send soldiers to arrest Him or even if any small part of the prophesy was not fulfilled then Jerusalem would not have suffered in the 70 AD. What we need to think is - are we fulfilling scriptures or is the other way that the scriptures confirm us of the future.

We will only understand this when we understand the tense in which God exist. In the English language we have no tense to describe the tense in which God exist. God exist in the past, present and future at the same time and so also His Word. He does not change nor does His Word change. The only thing that varies in all this is the people and their hearts.

Most prophesies have a variable and we can be that variable if we set our hearts accordingly. If the scripture talks of blessing or disaster concerning anyone, it depends on our hearts that we are part of it or not, if we are not then someone else would. God will not force or influence us to be part without our will. Either we or someone else on our behalf needs to request God to intervene so that we are part of or excluded from any prophesy; or else we do so by our own efforts. If not us then someone else would be part to that fulfilment but surely it would be fulfilled. So to be or not to be is our choice.

[ Prayer Starter ]
Lord, You are Almighty and Omnipresent God. It is not that You are everywhere but throughout time You exist and for You time is not a factor. You do not change nor does your Word. What You said holds even today and forever. You are Truth and eternal. We pray Lord that we realize how the change of our hearts can cause us to be blessed or be part of a calamity. Help us guide our hearts according to your will so that we remain blessed...

This prayer we make in Jesus' Name, Amen.
