Useless talk leads to poverty of the soul and spirit

Proverbs 14:23 - In all labour there is profit: but the talk of the lips tendeth only to penury (poverty)

Words have a bearing on our soul (inner man - mind, nature, emotions, will etc...) and on our spirit. Like the Word of God is life for us; it heals our spirit and soul. So also our words too can build or destroy our own or other people's spirit or soul. We should not only be careful of the good or harsh words but also the words in between which may not be bad or good.

Let me share with you a testimony. There was a sister (in Christ) of mine who was ministering a person. Being a friendly and the person being known to her she use to also speak to this person about worldly matters, talks that did not profit anybody of them. One would think there was no harm in such words, after all we need to be good to people, so we need speak to them. But as this sister was ministering to the person, that person started using these unwanted words as examples to defend her soul from changing. The person started using those discussions as shields from letting the Word of God from piercing her nature and spirit. Not only that but it also started back firing at this sister of mine and shaking her spiritually. So when my sister realized it, she stopped the useless talks.

There are many times we really do not give deep thought to what we speak and so do not realize the harm those words will bring. It is best suggested to keep silent if our words are not going to edify others or our own self. So every word we speak should be given thought and not taken likely.

[ Prayer Starter ]
Lord, I am sorry and ask your forgiveness for the useless words that I have spoken to others. I also ask You to forgive me for making an excuse about not being able to control my tongue. Give me the wisdom and will to control my words and to use it only for edification of others and myself. I make this prayer in Jesus' Name, Amen.

Wisdom 1:11 [KJV Apocrypha]
11 Therefore beware of murmuring, which is unprofitable; and refrain your tongue from backbiting: for there is no word so secret, that shall go for nought: and the mouth that belieth slayeth the soul.

The Word of God was given free to us, therefore we should also share it freely with others.
