1 Corinthians 10: 7 Neither be ye idolaters, as [were] some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
The word ‘Idolatry’ comes from the words ‘serving’ + ‘idols’. It is when we bow, kiss, and offer food or flowers or burn candles, incense, anything or any act to believe an idol has life is considered idolatry. Idols need not be just statues; they can be pictures or simple objects like money, vehicles, houses, jewellery, electronic devices, etc…
What is interesting is that even people, animals or religious symbol actually replace that which it represents is considered idolatry. Like a Man of God is given the place of God in one’s life, then it is idolatry, or a dove is thought to be the Holy Spirit is idolatry or bowing to a crucifix or kissing it is also idolatry.
Today’s scripture speaks of the celebrations/festivals connected to idolatry. They can be either joyful or sorrowful, both count as a celebration. One may say even God ordained festivals, so did He promote idolatry?
Biblical festivals are statutes, which means they are celebrated to understand its purpose and once the purpose is understood one is not called to celebrate them. They were for the children of Israel and not for Israel. That means we who are mature in spirit are called to celebrate festivals with those growing in spirit and not for us to celebrate amongst ourselves. So Men or Women of God do not celebrate festivals unless they are doing so with those growing spiritually.
In idolatry the celebration is a ritual and activity if not done, leads to condemnation either physically, mentally or spiritually.
I mentioned before that in Hebrew, every letter of the alphabet is an ideogram and symbolise objects or actions. For example, the word YHWH means ‘Behold Hand Behold Nail’ (Christ). When we decode the word idol in Hebrew, it comes as ‘Power of Darkness’.
The second Commandment says we cannot make an image (symbolical or actual) of anyone in Heaven, on Earth or one who is dead, and serve it. So making a statue of someone as Jesus Christ and serving it is Idolatry.
Let us be careful, many put a Man of God (dead or alive) in high esteem, almost as God, then they will not go to Heaven, contrary to what they assume. It is considered idolatry, and Heaven is no place for idolaters.
[Prayer Starter]
Lord, You are Almighty God. You are Spirit, and Heaven is a spiritual place. Spirit has no form that can be put in an image, but only an image that can be lived. Lord, we pray that we understand that perfect worship is when we live Your Image in us, not when we make temples, synagogues, or altars in Your name. We pray we do not foolishly land into idolatry even in Your name…
This prayer we make in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
