Ephesians 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

Christ dwelling in us requires two things: faith and love, which is what today’s scripture tells us.

Faith is misunderstood as just believing. What we believe in and how strong that belief is defines the difference between faith and hope. It is only when we believe in the truth strongly that it becomes faith; otherwise, it is hope. When that hold is unshakeable, it becomes authority. Jesus was called a man of authority and not a man of faith.

Some days back, as I was helping my daughter prepare her notes to preach on the Fruit Goodness. While doing so, we needed to identify the difference between Love and Kindness, and it was enlightening to get clarity.

Love is the will we hold towards doing good that benefits / edifies the recipient. Paul says, if love/that will does not exist, then all other things are meaningless.

Another interesting fact that is mentioned is the use of the words rooted and grounded. In English, they may seem the same, but when we look up the Greek words and their root meanings, it gives clarity as to why both words are used.

We understand them when we understand how the foundation of a tall building is done. One has to dig deep and also make sure it is rooted in rock and not mud or loose stones. Secondly, the foundation needs to be stabilised, else shaking, even like a small earthquake, can bring that structure down.

Rooted speaks of setting the foundation on a strong base, and grounding speaks of stabilising it. Rooting may be a one-time effort, but grounding requires continuous monitoring and change.

Having Christ dwelling in us is not simple but a continuous effort and a clear understanding of Him and His Kingdom (the Word of God).

So let us not be delusional to claim Christ dwells in us if we are not studying His Word and putting it in practice.

[Prayer Starter]
Lord, You are Almighty God. You Lord are Truth and Light. We pray Lord, we seek Light by seeking the understanding Your Word. We pray also that we realise the understanding will truly come when we abide in Your Word. Help us be the Temple where Your Glory dwells forever…

This prayer we make in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
