Matthew 8:8 The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
It was not a Jew or even one of Jesus’ own disciples who impressed Him with their faith, but it was a Roman centurion who did it. Even the woman with an issue with blood who stole a healing, according to a historian, was not a Jew but was a Roman and the widow of a senior Roman army official (which is evident in scriptures).
Faith is not correlated with an understanding of scripture (quantity); a Bible scholar need not necessarily be a person of great faith. Quality is more important than quantity. Ideally, a better and greater understanding of scriptures should harbour great faith, but even a small doubt can shake the whole understanding.
The parable of the mustard seed is misunderstood as referring to the size of the seed. It is not the smallest seed, but it is to do with its design. It is a seed with no air pocket; air symbolises doubt. So the parable speaks of a person having little knowledge, but a clear understanding can exhibit faith, which can move a mountain. Faith is also the ticket that assures our entry into Heaven. Jesus spoke to the centurion that Jews will be cast into the Lake of Fire for they believe in God but do not believe Him.
When it comes to faith, those who are less educated show greater faith, since worldly knowledge is yeast that causes air pockets. I know how God dealt with my worldly knowledge and caused me to bend my knee. People get shaken when I tell them I hardly pray. That does not mean I get lost in the world, for I am in continual worship as much as I can. I know when I pray or even desire, the Lord does answer. If I have prayed, I keep my eye on my prayer and await its answer. If I do not get an answer in a stipulated time, then I ask the Lord the reason, and most of the time I get an answer that satisfies me and also gets me to know things I was blind to.
Let us be clear in our understanding, for then only will our faith be strong and we will see the glory of God more and more.
[Prayer Starter]
Lord, You are Almighty God. You, Lord, are Spirit. You do not understand worldly languages, but understand the language of faith. Lord, we pray that we concentrate on building faith more than spending more time in prayer. We are called to worship You continually, but believe to receive…
This prayer we make in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
[Reference Scriptures]
Matthew 8:9-13
9 For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this [man], Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth [it].
10 When Jesus heard [it], he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, [so] be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.
Mark 5:25-34
25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,
27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment.
28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.
29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in [her] body that she was healed of that plague.
30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?
31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing.
33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.
34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.
