Galatians 1:16 To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood:
We normally see people relate the word preach to practising what one teaches, but in reality, it comes from the Latin word prae (“before”) and dicare (“to declare or make known publicly”). The word evolved from the Latin praedicare (“to proclaim”) to the Old French preechier, eventually becoming the Middle English prechen. The word preach simply means to proclaim.
When we go deeper into the Greek text, the word ‘euaggelizo,’ translated as ‘preaching,’ is a compound word. It consists of ‘eu’, which means ‘to prosper’ or ‘acting well’ and the word ‘aggelos’, which means ‘the messenger’, ‘envoy’, ‘one who is sent’. In other words, ‘euaggelizo’ means to live and proclaim the one who has sent us or whom we present. We see in Matthew 11:1 that the scripture says Jesus departed ‘to teach and preach’, showing that teaching and preaching are not the same. We also see in John 8:18 that Jesus says He bears witness not just of Himself but also of the Father who sent Him, thus He truly preached the Father.
In today’s scripture, we see Paul understood what the word ‘euaggelizo’ means; we see he says that he revealed the Son in him to the heathens, but for that, he had to not conform to flesh and blood. If we are preaching the Lord who is Spirit, then we need to walk in Spirit and not in flesh and blood; we need to be beyond natural desires.
[Prayer Starter]
Lord, You are Almighty God. You, Lord, are Spirit, and Your Kingdom is the Spirit world. Lord, we pray we seek not the things of this world but things of Heaven, thus walk in Spirit and not flesh and blood, such that when we preach You, they see Spirit, they see You more than us…
This prayer we make in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
