Haggai 1: 14-15 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, In the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
Today’s scripture speaks of the Lord stirring the spirits of Zerubbabel, of Joshua and of all the remnants of the people. The stirring caused them to do the work of the house of the Lord of hosts. What is important to note is that a date is also mentioned, and if one studies the chain of events, the date has importance.
For the past 2 days, I could not send any messages since I was attending the Gideon’s State Convention, and the theme they chose this year is ‘Sharpen the Edge’ (Ecclesiastes 10:10). The verse speaks of, if the iron is blunt and he does not sharpen the edge, he must put more strength into it. It then ends with speaking of wisdom as being important for direction.
We can find great worldly wisdom when we look at it in the natural sense. But when we look at it in the spiritual sense, it brings change and empowerment to the person.
The word for ‘Iron’ in Hebrew comes from the word meaning ‘vessel’, the word for ‘edge’ comes from the word meaning ‘face’, and the word ‘blunt’ means ‘to be dull’/ ‘ineffective’.
If we understand it, it speaks of us (the vessels) not having a clear identity of who we are, the important role we play in the plans of the Kingdom of God, we will be dull and ineffective. It is only when we know God and His plans for us that we start to be effective and sharp. Spiritual wisdom and understanding direct us to our goal and victory in the most effective way with the least effort.
Stirring the spirit is about bringing purpose, and that is not just the spark that starts the engine but also the fuel to drive it.
[Prayer Starter]
Lord, You are Almighty God. The world is filled with worldly knowledge but lacks spiritual understanding for they lack spiritual wisdom. We pray Lord Preachers do not pursue entertainment and worldly glory but deliver wisdom and understanding of the Word so that we take things by spiritual force greater than John the Baptist did…
This prayer we make in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
