This explains why Mary was present at the groom’s house days before the wedding feast, assisting with its organisation. Her authority in directing the servants and managing matters during the celebration indicates that she was not simply a guest but one of the hosts. Since it was her daughter who was getting married, Mary naturally took an active role in ensuring that everything was properly prepared for the banquet. She knew who all the guests were, and they had already arrived, so as to command the helpers to use the vases for wine at the command of her son Jesus. Not keeping water for washing on arriving for a banquet was a serious breach of Jewish tradition.

Jesus, who was already engaged in ministry, was thus invited along with His disciples to the wedding. It is wrongly understood that He started His ministry at 30, and that He did carpentry work before that.

If we read Matthew 13:55, it clearly says carpenter’s son and not a carpenter. Also, if we check the Greek text of Mark 6:3, there seems to be confusion because the word ‘carpenter’ is followed by ‘this’, then ‘son’, then ‘Mary’, then ‘brother of’ and then the names of her children through Joseph. There is no ‘of’ between ‘son’ and ‘Mary’, the relationship/connection word is between ‘carpenter’ and ‘son’. Jesus went from ministering to people outside cities to teaching in Synagogues after His baptism/40days wilderness testing, after He became a Rabbi.

Another misunderstanding is that they were having wine and that Jesus converted the water to wine. They were having fresh grape juice, and that is why the comment that they kept the best for last. Fresh grape juice turns bitter when kept longer, primarily due to oxidation and fermentation. It becomes alcoholic only when kept very long, or the fermentation is quickened by adding yeast. Even at the last supper, it was plain fresh grape juice that they drank and not wine.

Jesus reluctantly did the miracle because He knew He would not glorify the Father by this, but attract glory to Himself. It was for this reason that He rebuked His mother, reminding her that she was just His surrogate mother, not His biological mother and was not working in the interest of God’s kingdom/His mission.

Her name, Mary, meaning ‘a rebel’, was not a coincidence like all other names in the Bible. Simone the Prophet has prophesied that her name will be used to test the hearts of people, to expose the rebels (goats), who claim to be her children.

Let us not let human emotions overwrite the Word of God. Let us follow the Word of God and not the words of man. We die as children of our mothers but will live eternal life if we are Sons of the Father.

[Prayer Starter]
Lord, You are Almighty God. You created us man and woman for the reason to understand the relationship between You and man. Lord we pray we do not get carried with emotions but follow the Truth as given in Your Word, Your Word is Truth…

This prayer we make in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

[Reference Scriptures]
Matthew 13:55 Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us?
