Jesus places clay (wet mud) on his eyes and asks him to wash in the pool of Siloam. Jesus, who just commanded sickness to leave, put clay on his eyes and got him to wash in a pool?

The pool of Siloam also called Gihon and Shiloah in OT as Jerom writes Siloam is a fountain at the foot of Mount Sion, which does not send forth water continually, but on certain times and days; and comes through the hollow places of the earth, and caves of a hard rock, with a great noise; of which we especially cannot doubt, who dwell in this province”

The pool was significant to the history of Israel and the Targum records of it “because this people loathed the kingdom of the house of David, which ruled them quietly, as the waters of Shiloah which flow softly;”

If we look at all that was happening around it was just a bunch of faithless people, and anywhere Jesus encountered faithless people, Jesus could do little miracles. Jesus had to either get the person out of that faithless environment and heal the person, or use some hacks to confuse their faithlessness.

The pool of Siloam had sentimental value to the Jews, so the Pharisees to attack Jesus for doing the healing on a Sabbath focused on sin. First, the sin, according to them of healing on a Sabbath and the young man was condemned by God to blindness due to the sins of himself or his parents.

What may come as a surprise is Jesus saying ‘neither the man sinned nor his parents’ even though the Bible says none are found sinless, thus He came as a man to be our sacrifice. What is more surprising is that the verb ‘sinned’ in Greek ‘hamartano’ is written not in the past tense but in the aorist tense (past, present and future together).

Sickness came when sin started to manifest in man. It did not happen immediately; Adam’s sin manifested in his grandson, and he was named Enosh (mortal). God is merciful, and only that sin which is grave within us starts to manifest. So Jesus meant that the man’s blindness was not for his own sin or his parents’ sin, but for the glory of God. The man was the only one with faith, for he accepted Jesus Christ and worshipped Him.

Jesus also said to the Pharisees something profound ‘if ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth’. Jesus spoke of the sin of faithlessness, not of all sins. Because we see/know and yet do not believe, we are considered as sinners of faithlessness.

[Prayer Starter]
Lord, You are Almighty God. You, Lord, are Merciful God. It is only due to Your Mercy that we live and come to know You. Lord, we pray we do not live in the sin of faithlessness by our rejecting You or Your Word. We pray we accept that which is true even when it costs us a great deal…

This prayer we make in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

[Reference Scriptures]
John 9:3,11,15-16,21-22,35-41
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
11 He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.
15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.
16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
22 These [words] spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
36 He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?
37 And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
38 And he said, Lord, I believe.
