Luke 7:28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
Jesus praised John the Baptist as one of the greatest Prophets ever born. What we need to read into it is that John surpassed even the great Moses. Elijah made a great mistake of over-exercising his anointing, not for the glory of God or the Kingdom of God, but for his own stature. He did not realise that it is not about being right or wrong, but about projecting the Nature of God. He, as Elijah, was the only Prophet rebuked by Jesus, but as John praised the most after he repented.
Elijah understood this towards the end of his mistake, so when he came as John the Baptist, he lived a life of repentance, healing himself in those areas in which he, as Elijah, suffered. Elijah learnt the hard way that God, who is Almighty and Righteous, yet showers us with His mercy and gives us time, chance and help to change, thus as John preached repentance and baptism in His Name. He understood God has kept judgment as the last option, not first.
Even though John the Baptist/Elijah is praised by Jesus as the greatest of Prophets until then, Jesus says anyone who becomes least in the Kingdom can still be greater than him.
The word translated as least is the Greek word ‘mikros’. When we dig into the rendering of the word, it speaks of being small or little in specific areas and not of being nothing.
a) of size: hence of stature, of length (not seeking one’s stature amongst people)
b) of space (living the minimum)
c) of age: less by birth, younger (not demanding inheritance/due/rights in this world)
d) of time: short, brief, a little while, how little! (no short-term gains)
e) of quantity: i.e. number, amount (seeking quality over quantity, i.e. seeking disciples for God more than just believers or disciples for oneself)
f) of rank or influence (preferring exaltation by God over that by man)
Let us understand we work for the Kingdom of God, and even though we are Sons and rightful heirs, yet we are bondmen not to God but to others, those who are also due as heirs to the Kingdom of God. As Sons, it is our duty to make sure those called to be Sons find their way, Home.
We will be honoured and glorified by the Lord when we enter His Kingdom, just as Jesus Himself will return to His Glory with the Father when He returns to the Father.
[Prayer Starter]
Lord, You are Almighty God. You are Almighty God. You made all things Good even though You knew it was not Perfect. You allowed darkness and fall so that by our overcoming, we will know You more and be more like You. Lord, we pray we understand things more deeply and not be short-sighted…
This prayer we make in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
