Luke 11:39 And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.
Washing of hands and feet before entering the Holy place was symbolic of seeking forgiveness for sins done knowingly and unknowingly, respectively. God said anyone who comes before Him without first receiving forgiveness of their sins would die. Washing was a statute, so it needed to be understood and not followed blindly.
The Jews had made a mockery of forgiveness for sins by associating physical washing with it. They turned the symbolism into actuality. This is also seen in other religions, too, be it Hinduism, Islam or Buddhism.
Let us not try to fool ourselves with glorifying symbolism to believe it as actuality. Let us understand God knows our every thought, our every intent. Our bodies will perish to dust, and what will remain is our soul, our spirit. We are judged by our souls, what image it carries, that of God or of corruption.
[Prayer Starter]
Lord, You are Almighty God. You, Lord, are Spirit, and we can seek You only in Spirit and Truth. Lord, we pray we do not try to fool You with our lifting up of hands in praise, our kneeling in prayer, or our crying during worship, when our hearts are far from You and Your Kingdom. We pray that what is within us is submitted to You more than our external…
This prayer we make in Jesus’ Name, Amen.
