Haggai 2: 12 If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
The term used here is sacred and not holy. The Hebrew word is qadash, which means set aside.
Holy means perfection, and nobody or nothing is perfect; only God in His Divine form is perfect. It is for this reason that Lord Jesus Christ, although He was without blemish, yet said He was not due the term Holy [All Goodness], only God is. We need to understand that, at the beginning, He humbled Himself, created the Havens, this Creation and all things within it, then later took the form of a man; all this required Him to give up His perfection in the beginning. If He had not given up His perfection, then we, not just man but even the Angels in Heaven, cannot stand before Him. All this exercise of making this world (both Heavens and this Creation) is to enable us to stand before Him in His perfection. With this understanding, we will realise that nothing other than a living being in the image of God can seek holiness.
Coming to sacred objects. In the OT, only things that were used in the Temple or connected to performing sacrifices were considered sacred. It was because these objects were shadows of understanding that was hidden from them. In the NT, with the coming of Jesus Christ, truth was being revealed (through our receiving the Spirit of Truth), so now these objects simply become objects and it is their understanding that becomes sacred.
Just to give an example, when we say Holy Bible, although the word means Holy Book, yet the paper or the covering is not holy, but the words it holds are. A person who takes good care of the book, gives great respect to the object, is of little standing before the Lord than a person who follows it but holds a dirty and tattered Bible.
It was the Catholic Church that started the concept of holy objects/relics. They wanted money to build grand churches, so the Pope sold objects connected to the Apostles. Later, greed led them to manufacture them and con people with fake ones. Over the years, people have come to accept the fakes as icons. Even today, a large amount of the income of this Church is due to the selling of icons/fake/imitation relics.
Coming out of the Catholic Church and all its deceptions, it makes me nervous when people, while praying over them, ask me to bless objects, their houses, vehicles or even water or oil. I have to refuse, I do not do it bluntly, but do it trying not to hurt them. They do not realise they are going back to the days of OT when people did not know the truth and lived in darkness.

Lord, You are Almighty God. You, Lord, are Holy God, and there is none like You. You alone are perfect. A Part of You humbled Himself, created the Heavens and this creation and later became man. Lord Jesus Christ, You showed us the way to holiness so that one day we, along with the Angels, will be worthy to stand before the Father…
